What Is This World Coming To?

By Kundan Shumsher Rana

The world we live in is an amazing place. There are many beautiful things that inspire us to do many wonderful things, but as of late there have been many acts of violence that makes me think otherwise. In an ideal world, people respect each other, live in harmony and there are no such things like acts of violence, but we do not live in an ideal world. Things are messy and uninspiring in the real world. The recent events that have taken place in many parts of the world are horrifying and tragic. Boko Haram’s deadliest massacre where 2000 people in Nigeria were killed and the death of 12 people in France, have made a huge impact on the world. These acts are appalling and dishonor the victims. They create a negative wave of publicity and are spread around the world like wildfire. We all may know what had happened in these two tragic events, but how much do we actually know about them? I mean, we all know the protests of “Je Suis Charlie” in France. This event is well documented and well covered by the media, but what about the deaths in Nigeria? This event was hardly covered by the world media. Why is that? Are the two tragedies not horrifying? Or is one more violent than the other? Or is it that France is more accessible to the media personnel that they almost completely ignore Nigeria? Are the deaths of 12 more tragic than the deaths of 2000? These are the questions I want to ask the world media. Let us talk about “Je Suis Charlie”. In case you’re wondering, it translates in English to “I Am Charlie”. Journalists have stated this event as “France‘s 9/11”. This event is about the targeted slaughter of 10 staff members of Charlie Hebdo, a weekly magazine and also two policemen stationed outside the newspaper headquarters. Now, in comparison to this, let us see the events that took place in Nigeria. In Baga, Nigeria 2000 people were killed mercilessly in less than 24 hours, but there wasn’t much talk about it. Terrorists attacked the town of Baga. They were armed to the teeth and attacked everyone in sight. The town’s people who couldn’t run and protect themselves were majority of the victims in this attack. I am ashamed to say that I was unaware of this tragic event. I came across it on Facebook through one of my friends. When I read about it, I was very sad and even cried a little. These acts of violence may have surprised me. They are horrifying tragedies that people must be aware of. We should raise our voices to prevent them and act towards making a safe future. If people feel unsafe in their own homes in their own countries then what type of world are we living in? The people have a right to be happy and feel safe. They have the right to free speech and the right to free will. No one can take that away and if anyone tries  to, it is the responsibility of the government to prevent that from happening. It is the responsibility of the media to make other people aware of the dangers of having their freedoms taken away. We all may feel safe in our own little worlds, but there is a bigger world out there that we are unaware of. Things like Freedom of Speech, and Freedom of Religion are very important things to any human being and if they aren’t given to the people, society will crumble. It doesn’t mean that we can misuse these rights. We have a responsibility to stay between the lines and not go overboard with our rights.
