UNESCO urges authorities to follow norms

By Sweekriti Gautam

Rani Pokhari was destroyed by the earthquake on 25 April. President Bidya Devi Bhandari had inaugurated the National Reconstruction Campaign from Rani Pokhari on April.

UNESCO has expressed its concerns about the inappropriate building of Rani Pokhari. UNESCO had sent a letter to Kathmandu Metropolitan City and department of Archaeology last week. The DOA claimed that concrete materials like cement, sand and rods have been used in rebuilding the Balgopaleshwor temple.

In a statement by the UN's cultural agency: "Such practice raises a serious question on the creditability of the future heritage rebuilding in the Kathmandu valley."

UNESCO appealed to both DOA and KMC to immediately stop the work and ensure that the rebuilding process is appropriately monitored  and supervised. The UNESCO also added that awarding the contract to the cheapest bidder is inappropriate in the case of rebuilding the heritage as it increases the risk of destroying the uniqueness of the heritage.

The department of Archaeology directed KMC to halt the reconstruction of Rani Pokhari effectively.
