Shrawan 15th: A Day to Mesmerize Our Taste Buds with Kheer

By Shreha Regmi

We found out the reason behind eating dahi and chiura in Asadh 15th, right?  Now, let's hop on to Shrawan, the month of green. We can see females wearing bright yellow and green bangles and putting on beautiful mehendis on their hand. Even my mom wears green and yellow bangle and she takes a fast on every Monday. She goes to Lord Shiva’s temple and worships and comes home. I find it amusing. Every year, it seems like she is waiting for this month to arrive. I asked, “Mom, why do you fast every time?”. All she said was, “Because I want to.” Well, the month Shrawan holds a religious background. It is regarded as a holy month because there are many different festivals happening in this month. This month is also known as the month of Lord Shiva. It is said that in Shrawan sombar, Samundra Manthan (churning of the oceans) took place. In the process, poison came out and it was then consumed by Lord Shiva. He stored in the throat and his throat turned blue because of the poison. People also call him as Neelkantha. Because the poison burns oneself, Lord Shiva kept the crescent moon on his head. When Lord Shiva was married to Devi Parbati, she had to cook some sweets to feed her family. Devi Parbati is also known as Annapurna. What she cooked was kheer. She fed the kheer to her husband and his holy mount, his worshippers and everyone else in The Kailash. Lord Shiva loved the kheer and every time else, Devi Parbati used to feed him kheer. This is the reason people eat kheer in Shrawan 15th. This is the month of lord Shiva, and everyone offers kheer to him. It is a special day for people to celebrate together and enjoy. People who love kheer, grab a plate and eat all the kheers you want. Happy eating people!!
