Road expansion in Koteshwor creates pollution havoc

By Sneha Parajuli

Ring Road Expansion Programme and Outer Ring Road Development Project continues to cause problems to its residents. The project aims at expanding the 9.5 kilometer road from Koteshwor to Kalanki from three lanes to eight lanes. Although the people seem to be happy because of the expansion of roads, they are facing a lot of complications. Taking bath in the morning and going to work, then returning back home wearing a blanket of dust has been a daily routine for the people living in the Koteshwor area. Visibility of the roads has been diminished to a considerable extent due to the pollution caused by construction activities. Vehicles are stuck in traffic for hours wasting significant amount of people's time. There are accidents taking place because of the unmanaged road. People are not able to use the road that they have always used to travel to work because of the ongoing construction process. Despite these problems, all citizens of Kathmandu valley are happy because of the fact that after a few months, the expansion will be in the phase of its completion. The people have the mindset that the problem won't last long. Mr. Kamal Thapa, a shopkeeper of Koteshwor said, "What’s the use of expanding the roads if we’re having so much difficulty now?” In contrast, Mr. Sushin Poudel, a resident of Koteshwor said, “It’s only a matter of time. The roads will be wider and will have eight lanes. There will be no more traffic jams and we will be able to ride freely.”
