Microsoft: One Operating System for All platforms.

By Abhusan Gautam

Leader of the operating system, Microsoft, is known for having different operating system versions released every few years. Each platform, either Phone, or PC or Tab or X-box or Servers, support different OS of different versions. The Windows phones have their own version of Windows 8, the Server computers have a different interface, the Xbox have its own qualities, and we are familiar with most of the Windows OS of PC. While the different OSs have their similarities, they differ vastly in many regards. Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, has confirmed that Microsoft will convert all the operating systems and amalgamate them into one operating system. According to reports, Microsoft has created a team of experts in the Operating System Engineering Group. The group will focus on bringing different OSs and combine them into one OS. According to him, the new operating system will “streamline the next version of Windows from three operating systems into one single converged operating system”. That means, Microsoft is inching forward towards one operating system that covers all screen sizes. Prior to this, Microsoft had huge range of operating systems and most of them couldn’t interact with each other. Billions of people used Microsoft each day but couldn’t use other devices since they were not always synced. Moreover, this comes as an excellent news to developers since now they can design and build apps that actually run in all the products of Microsoft. This could be Microsoft’s best decision to maintain their superiority in the OS world. Apple manages two OS for its 2 major devices- iOS for phones and tabs, and Mac OS for their laptops, Google does the same – Android for the phone and tabs, and Chromebook for the laptop. How will Microsoft fare with one operating system for all devices? According to the critics, the idea is flawed conceptually and it could never work out. But many have reacted positively towards this initiative and are pretty confident of its success. But we never know until it happens, so waiting is the only option we have.
