Measurement of Time

By Dipesh Poudel

Time as we know is an interval between any two events. We measure short periods of time in hours, minutes and seconds. For a long period, we have days, months and years and for very long periods of time we have decade, century and so on. We measure time in its length. That might be very good in science but might not be a very good idea for us. Life is not lived in hours, minutes or seconds rather life is lived in moments. Those moments can be of split seconds, but they leave a deep impact in our lives.

In science 1 second is defined as “the duration of 9,162,631,770 periods of the radiation corresponding to the transition between the two hyperfine levels of ground state of cesium-133 atom”. This is what one second translates to in science. Let's forget science for a moment. What does one second mean to us? For some of us one second means nothing for a person who survived an accident by a second it is the most important one second in his/her life. For a husband waiting outside the operation room when his wife is giving birth to a child it is the longest hour in his life and it sure makes an impact on his life. Sometimes a very brief period of time seems very long and sometimes a very long period of time seems very short. It all depends on impact which that time period makes in our lives. There was a ten year long armed civil war in Nepal, but it pushed our country a century back. So we are lagging behind by a century in development. The ten years of civil war has made an impact so deep that we are a century behind the world. Even the same period of time passes differently for different people in different situations. Its all because of the impact it makes in a person's life. So time should not be measured in its length rather it should be measured in depths of the impact that it makes. That way we can understand our self and the world better.
