DWIT Software Club organized Linux Boot Camp on Feb. 4, Saturday. The main aim of this workshop was to get the participants' PCs up and running with Linux operating system and to make the users learn the basics of using Linux. There was a total of sixteen participants. The workshop started at around 9 a.m. when all the participants had arrived. Saurav Bhandari ’19 facilitated the workshop. The workshop was divided into two sessions. The first session involved the installation of Linux on the participant’s laptops which took up most of the time of the workshop. It was a long and complicated process and all the participants followed the step by step instructions of the instructor. After successfully completing the installation process on all the participant’s laptops a short break ensued. After the break of about half an hour, the second session resumed which covered the basics of using Linux and getting the hang of it such as using the terminal, downloading applications, tweaking the theme and appearance, using various applications and other basic stuff which was more interesting than the first session. Linux is the best-known and most-used open source operating system. It is the most compatible system in the world as it is highly adaptable and can work with most types of applications.
"Using Linux is something that every programmer has to do at some point in his or her career. So, the main objective of the workshop was to introduce the junior batches of DWIT to this system and help them learn how to use it." - Shreyansh Lodha, the President of DWIT Software Club
“I thought using Linux would be very hard, but apart from the installation process I think it’s pretty simple though I am only just getting started,” says Shreya Sapkota ’20, a participant. I was also one of the participants and I found the workshop to be very informative and beneficial. Even though the workshop was conducted by a senior student I found it quite comfortable to learn.
