Internaut Day!

By Saras Karanjit

25 years ago today, something incredible was invented. Only a very few people would have predicted that the thing they invented would one day rule the world. Yes, I’m talking about the invention of the Internet. Exactly 25 years ago, on 23rd August 1991, the web was born. The inventor of the Internet, Tim Berners-Lee invited the public to access the World Wide Web on the Internet. The web was developed at the CERN Institute in Switzerland beginning in 1989. Here's a link to the first ever website made. The World Wide Web Project The web was only available to the global participants, something called the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). Since then the Internet has become an increasing important part of our lives. To mark this event, every year 23rd August has been celebrated as Internaut Day. ‘Internaut’ is a portmanteau of the words Internet and astronaut - an early reference to technically able internet users. Starting its services initially for the IEFT, it gradually expanded to members of the Internet Society and then the larger global community. Since then the users of the Internet have increased massively. The number of Internet users has increased tenfold from 1999 to 2013. Also the first, second and third billion users were reached in 2005, 2010 and 2014 respectively. Latest stats show that the total users of the Internet have already crossed over 3.4 billion which is about 46% of the total population of the world. intr   World Wide Web is so amazing and so powerful yet it fits in the palm of your hand, Happy Internaut Day everybody!
