App Review: Assist Nepal

ReNepal, Re building a disaster-ready 21st Century Nepal had recently organized a hackathon in order to use technology to overcome the effects of the earthquake that shook Nepal. Their main theme was enable the relief, recovery, and rebuilding efforts using technology. There were three main organizers who organized this Hackathon, Kathmandu Engineering College (KEC), University of Houston and WAKHOK Nepal. Supporting partner for this event were LeapFrog, WordLink, YoungInnovatons, Global Nepal Professional Network and Expresiv. There were many participants including students of some CSIT colleges.

There were three memberes in Team CapCoder namely Abhishek Gupta (DWIT), Sanjeev Mainali (DWIT), Ajeet Chaulagain ( St.Xaviers). Team CapCoder had come up with an idea in order to help the victims of earthquake. Thier application, Assist Nepal provides the disaster victims with information, support, services and a mechanism to access and apply for disaster assistance through collaborative, data-sharing efforts between different governmental and non-governmental organizations.

There are three user for this product, disaster victims (seekers), governmental/non-governmental organization (providers) who provides assistance to victims and VDC.

VDC is responsible for filling up the detailed information of seeker and their needs. After a seeker gets to the VDC, the VDC will be able to fill up their detailed information to the system. Also, VDC is responsible to put up the notice and information about government assistance campaign through the push information menu. If the communication gap is fulfilled then the victims will get relief in time; this is the main objective of the application

Features:

                                                                                   PROVIDERS

Provides need to register within the system if they want to provide assistance details to the victims. They need to fill up the elementary details of their organization who is willing to provide the assistance.

Create Assistance: Providers can create a new assistance campaign by filling a form that provides the overall information about the campaign along with requirements to get the assistance and under which category it falls on.

After they have successfully posted an assistance campaign, victims will be able to see its details on their interface and will be able to apply for assistance.

List All Seekers

Provides will able to get the tabular list of all the seeker who are applying for different assistance provided by other providers. They will be filter the seekers from the elementary details provided in the list. This will help a provider to get an overview from where most seekers are from and what they want.

My Seekers: This will provide the tabular listing of the seekers who applied for the assistance campaign provider by the provider who is logged in the system. Provider can then contact to their seekers and provide them with assistance.

Notification Vault: Provides will get the immediate notification if any victims has successfully applied for the assistance campaign they have created. On a single click to the notification they will be able get details of the victim.

                                                                                SEEKERS

Assistance Vault: Disaster victims will able to search the Assistance under several categories. They will be able get information about the assistance provided by the provider along with the provider details. They will also get information about the requirements that needs to be fulfilled in order to apply for assistance.

Apply For Assistance: Victims can apply for any assistance available on the portal if they think they have satisfied the requirements. They will be able to send their elementary information and can query for extra information too. After seeker has applied for the assistance, his/her location will be mapped to Google Maps which is in the homepage of this application.

Nearby Agencies: Disaster victims can look-up for the list of organization that provides assistance along with their elementary details. Organizations list is provided in such a way that victims can filter the organizations by their location and sort of assistance they are upon.

EQ Information: This feature provides the information to both victims and assistance providers about the assistance plans and policies made by the government. Information’s will be provide by the VDC.

The front end of application is built using Semantic UI, Bootstrap, HTML, CSS, JS and back end using PHP with MySQL. They have also used some of third party software like Google Maps Embedded API, Google Maps Location API, Data Tables, etc.
