By Amun Kharel

Photo Courtesy: http://blog.nz.usembassy.gov Open data day was a one of the highlights of the year as it was held in Deerwalk Institute of Technology successfully where students from various colleges showcased their talent in the event. It was once in a life time opportunity to use the open data available on the Internet to make an application within an allocated time. It was a great learning curve for those students but there were no students who didn’t feel that the app could have been much better if they had done it in particular manner. Several senses of achievements and regrets made the event tasteful. But a bigger platform; International Space app challenge is on the way. The International Space Apps Challenge is an international mass collaboration focused on space exploration that takes place over 48hours in cities around the world.  The event embraces collaborative problem   solving with a goal of producing relevant opensource solutions to address global needs applicable to both life on Earth and life in space. This is the fourth time it is being organized in Nepal. This year there are over 25     challenges in four areas: Earth, Outer Space, Humans and Robotics. NASA is leading this global collaboration along with a number of government collaborators and over 100 local organizing teams across the globe. Yes, it is a bigger event in the sense that students will be competing with engineers, technologist, scientists, designers, artists, educators and entrepreneurs with broad range of skills who will be making application to change the world in the two days hackathon sessions. It will be the real test of creativity of the students because it focuses mainly on the application with great ideas and great ideas come from great minds. These ideas will help people in their day to day activities. This event is definitely not about past regrets and ego but this event is about coming up with the solutions to help people and learning with great mind around the city within 2 days. Students will be judged for the impact, creativity, product, sustainability and presentation of their application. It is definitely a tough ask but participants ought to try their best to stand aside to be declared as the best. The event will take place on April 11-12, 2015 at The Royal Event Pvt. Ltd., Tinkune, Kathmandu. More students are expected to participate or atleast visit in the event this time around as it is held once every year. “Life changing opportunities and unlimited possibilities” is the theme of the event. Hopefully, great Nepalese mind will solve local problems and change the world.
