2016 - Year in Review for Nepal

By Giriraj Khatri

2016 just concluded and now we are at the very beginning of 2017. Here is a compilation of some of the major events of 2016. If you think that you have missed any of them then have a glance at the following excerpts.

AFC Solidarity Cup

Nepal won against Macau to claim the title of AFC solidarity cup held in Malaysia. This was a major accomplishment for All Nepal Football Association (ANFA). When the ANFA was sick with corruption and senior national players were involved in a match-fixing scandal, this was one that made the football fans happy. This trophy is the only trophy won by Nepal in a tournament conducted by The Asian Football Confederation. This opened Nepal's chance to play the AFC qualifier and let us hope that Nepal's performance will be praiseworthy in 2017 and be something to talk about again this year.

Load Shedding Free

Just a year back, the citizen of the country were forced to face 18 hours of power cut a day in the dry season, but in 2016 Nepal became free of load shedding. Thanks to Kulman Ghising – Chairman of Nepal Electricity Authority and Janardhan Sharma - Head of Ministry of Energy, without whose effort this would have been a mere dream for another 10 years. This was all possible by controlling the leakage of electricity, uneven distribution of electricity to factories and other bodies close to NEA.

Pushpa Kamal Dahal Becomes Prime Minister For The Second Time

The head of Communist Party of Nepal (CPN-Maoist), Mr. Puspa Kamal Dahal, became the prime minister of the country replacing KP Sharma Oli. He had also served as the prime minister of the country in 2008-09. Well, the prime minister of our country keeps on changing and it is a difficult task to remember all the names.

CAN Gets Suspended by ICC

Cricket Association of Nepal was suspended by International Cricket Council in a view of government interference in the cricket board. The suspension came when National Sports Council formed an ad-hoc committee to run the CAN. This was a heartbreaking news for cricket fans when Nepal was making an impression in international level by playing the T- 20 world cup. However, the suspension has been lifted and let us hope that Nepal will come back strong in cricketing world this year.

Death of Sushil Koirala

The president of Nepali Congress and former prime minister of the country died due to cardiac arrest at the age of 76. He was single and known for spartan life. Before being the prime minister of the country, he did not hold any public offices, although his party came to power several times since 1990.

Seventh National games

National Sports Council conducted the seventh national games in Eastern Nepal. Nepal Army secured top position by winning the highest number of medals and the next edition will be held in Mid - Western Region.

Nepal Goes Online

The government of Nepal finally started a procedure to fill a different online form. Now, we can fill the driving license and passport form online. This has removed the hurdle of standing in queue since midnight just to submit the form. Let us hope that this will continue to happen in 2017 in other fields too.
