It was an extraordinary event, which did the extraordinary life story of Mother Teresa, justice it deserved. The Albanian-Indian Roman Catholic nun known popularly as Mother Teresa was formally declared a saint in a canonization mass by Pope Francis in Vatican City.

On Sunday morning before the huge crowd of pilgrims gathered in Saint Peters’ square, Pope Francis delivered the formula for the canonization of Mother Teresa – known as the “saint of gutters”. Speaking in Latin, the Francis said, “After due deliberation and frequent prayer for divine assistance, and having sought the counsel of many of our brother bishops, we declare and define Blessed Teresa of Calcutta to be a saint, and we enroll her among the saints, decreeing that she is to be venerated as such by the whole church."

After that, he praised Mother Teresa as a model of compassion among Catholics worldwide and gave them a purpose in life.

Hundreds of nuns from the Missionaries of Charity sisterhood founded by mother Teresa had gathered from around the world to witness and celebrate this moment. A huge portrait of Mother Teresa hung from the St. Peter’s Basilica which was the venue for the historical event.
