Year of The Underdogs
(Dibyamshu Shrestha is an intern at Deerwalk Services and DWIT.) I love an underdog story. Whenever there is a neutral situation, I always root for the underdog because it gives me joy to see the smaller one win for a change. It is really disheartening if the underdog mishap goes against you but when you are rooting for them it’s a lot of fun. As the world cup draws closer and closer, I feel like this year is going to be the year of the underdogs. With smaller teams boasting bigger talents, I feel some upsets are on the cards. And one of the biggest underdogs this year at the world cup is undoubtedly Belgium. They come shoulder to shoulder with the top teams if we compare the amount of youth artillery this team possesses. After a brief golden period in the 1980s, the Belgian team has been absent or rather unnoticed in the World Cups. The last time they were in the World Cup was back in 2002 when they were defeated in the quarter final by Brazil. And boy, haven’t they come back in style! Eden Hazard, Vincent Kompany, Marouane Fellaine, Romelu Lukaku, and Kevin De Bruyne, the list goes on. They really are the “Dark Horse” this year. Not in terms of players because they have fantastic players that are highly revered in the football world, but as a team, very little of them is known. But they lack experience. As talented as this bunch of players are, they lack the experience that most of the other teams posses. In a grandiose event as the world cup, there is a good chance that the pressure might get to them. They might get overwhelmed under pressure. Some of the big players of the team do have big game experiences, but not enough. Sharing a group with Algeria, Russia and South Korea, Belgium has an open road to the Round of 16. This is a very well matched group. Russia and South Korea are big competitions for Belgium, but Belgium has a better quality of players, hands down. As long as they play even moderately well as a group, they should qualify. I would bet on Belgium to top the group. Then they would either meet Germany or Portugal. But considering Germany would top their group, it is probably going to be Belgium vs Portugal in the round of 16, which I think is going to be the game of the world cup. I find it almost impossible to call, and it’s amazing how these two teams are similar in a lot of respects. I would still call Belgium though. I think it’s going to be the year of the underdogs. England is another underdog of the tournament. They are in the “group of death” but I still think they are going to pull off a qualification. I believe this is the year, when the underdogs feast on some of the monsters, and take some glory back home.
