What's Next After SLC?
School students get scared and begin to panic after hearing the word “Iron gate” that defines the SLC examination. And like other years, this year too, the SLC examination was successfully held for tenth grade students. A great burden for the school-level students has been cleared on 28th March, Friday. No exams, no classes , no tension for them, at least for some time. But again one feeling holds them back from enjoying their holidays. What to study now? How to utilize their free time, which may be used for further study? What’s next after SLC? Student life is never easy. These questions are going to haunt their minds throughout the holidays. They are in one of the important phases of their life. Their decision will shape their future. They have entered into thea world where there are many opportunities. They can choose the field of their interest now. They can join +2, A levels or IB after SLC by figuring out what they actually want to do in the future with +2 being the most popular choice for most students. For a long time “+2” has been running capably in Nepal. HSEB has developed this curriculum and it is bounded by the Government of Nepal (GON). There are different fields to choose inside “+2”. There are science, commerce and humanities. All of these subjects have their own importance. Chemistry, physics, biology and maths are taught under science. The Future is bright for students who choose science as it opens the path to engineering and medicine. English novelist and art historian Anita Brookner said of Commerce – “The lessons taught in great books are misleading. The commerce in real life is rarely so simple and never so just.” Accounts, economics, math and business studies along with Nepali and English are taught in Commerce. It has a wider scope. The management of business and organizations like hotels and tourism also has to be studied by Management students. They can choose commerce if they want to get into the banking sector or something related to finance. Humanities is the field within which many other subjects are included. Social sciences, arts, economics are taught under humanities. Humanities helps to improve one’s skill at oral and written communication. Students studying humanities can visualize the interconnectedness of all areas by learning to appreciate the value of creativity. This study can keep them close to the community and politics. All these different fields cannot be compared. They all have their own benefits for personnel and country’s development. At the end of the day, it does not matter where the student goes and what he/she studies, what matters the most is what he decides to be in the future.
