Time management of a basketball player

By Barsha Dahal

How can a person manage time for study and sports at the same time, especially when study-life these days can be so overwhelmingly hefty at times? It sounds tricky in itself. Can a student be academically excellent and still turn out to be a good player? To end my curiosity, I talked to a player of my college who has also been getting good grades in studies. How awesome would it be if only we could expand time and complete all our assignments way before the deadline. If only we had a remote control to control our time. If only we could go back to our past and relive those moments again and rejoice our memories. If only we could see our future and live those moments now. There are things that were, are and will always be existing. And there are things that could very well be impossible, but we want them to happen. Fantasies, dreams and fairytales are the abstract projections of time, which are created by our mind. But the ground reality that we experience in our day-to-day life happens to be very different. We have limited time and almost unlimited things to do. Assignments, presentations, study are always there to be done and we need some timely recreation and fun as well. Can a single person  show active participation in everything he/she is supposed to do? Or are they impossible without an adequate chunk of sacrifices and compromises? There are some people who can achieve their goal with minimum sacrifices. One of them is a basketball player of our college, Ronit Pradhan. He has started playing basketball since grade 10. He was a football player before that. But after his leg injury, he started playing basketball, which has become more of a passion than an alternative. He arrives at college at 7 am and leaves at 7 pm. When asked what if he couldn’t complete his assignment due to his basketball “obligations’, he said it was not much of a distraction. He added if you want to do it, nothing could stop you if you are committed enough. He is satisfied with the way he plays. He does some practice in the weekends and in the holidays as well. He seemed extremely happy when I asked him how he felt being in the final and securing 2nd position in the intra-college basketball tournament. He feels he needs to improve in his studies. Although he is giving his best to manage his time, it hasn’t been an easy ride for him. There have been times when he’s struggled to do well in his class tests and complete assignments in time.  He had made the list of the most important work to be done with deadlines as a reminder. He loves playing basketball and coding and finds himself complete to be known as a basketball player and a good programmer. Ronit has been an example for all basketball lovers and those who had thought managing time for both study and sports is impossible. If we have strong determination for doing something, then nothing can stop us. Even the strongest and irresistible time cannot let you down. So, don’t give up dreaming and keep the passion to get it. No doubt, time will not control you. Instead you will control the time and live your dreams and your life. It’s just the matter of trust and determination.
