Is Suicide the Only Option?

By Asmita Subedi

It is heartbreaking to hear the news of suicides every year after the results of board examinationsgetpublished. This year as well, after the announcement of results of SLC 2070, 3 to 4 studentsfrom different districts, who were unable to bear failure, killed themselves. This tendency of attempting suicide is a common practice ofdealing with failure and the fear of getting rejected. But is suicide the only option? The environment where the studentsare raised is highly concerned with scores and grades. Thus, the only thing that is set within any student’s mind is to get good grades and to get a certificate. Very few people really understand the value of education in such environment. Majority of people believe that education is what gets printed on a sheet of paper called acertificate. No one ever bothers to understand the ability of a student, neither parents nor teachers, and hence everyone expects equally excellent results from different students who may have abilities. This puts tremendous pressure on a student’s mental health. Failing to perform as per the expectation of their parents and teachers make them feel that their future is demolished. They feel that their future is bleak. They feel intolerablyfrightened, hopeless, helpless, confused and distressed, and in order to escape such feelings they commit suicide considering that it is the only way out. One of the many reasons of such suicides may be the education policy of our country. Education policy has created disparity between the quality of education provided in the private and government schools. Very few students pass yearly from the government schools compared to the private schools. The rationale behind this can be the bitter fact that government schools are failing to provide quality education despite the annual investments, whereas private schools are unaffordable to most of the students. This disparity will keep on increasing if not addressed in time. The Education Ministers and Officers should be responsible and should assureprovision of quality education with dedication in every type of schools, be it government schools or private schools. Suicides every year show that, in one way or the other, everyone has failed, whether it is the students or parents or teachers or the policy makers. Parents and teachers should understand that everyone does not have equal abilities and hence should not bind each child by expectations surpassing their abilities. They should emphasize on learning effectively and practically rather than running blindly towards marks and divisions. Furthermore, students should learn that failing doesn’t mean the end of life and suicide is not the only way out.Excelling academically is important but it is not the only factor determining success in life. There are several other ways to be successful. Failing the examination does not mean that every door is closed. There are other fields like arts, music, sports and many more where one can be equally excellent and successful. To sum up, students should recognize their ability and should move ahead in their life. They shouldn’t let a single sheet of examination paper determine their future. They need to be strong and move ahead embracing the failures because failures are the stepping stones to success.
