After three months of strike, on November 19 Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha (SLMM) took a decision that was supposed to be good news for everyone. There were bunch of points on their press release and one of them was allowing school to open up to 11 A.M. That is a good thing, right? Well no! Let’s analyze the situation.

Terai reason is very hot is summer and very cold in winter. Due to this reason, schools in Terai open in morning shifts in summer and in afternoon shifts in winter season. Children easily catch cold and it can be cause of death for those children. Majority of schools there are not in a state to install air conditioner or heater to keep students and teachers warm during cold winter. Hence, this decision indirectly means that the schools will remain close until this problem is resolved.

From the very beginning of 2015, education sector has been dealing with lots of problems: first the earthquake of April 20th and now the strikes. SLMM were playing with the future of students before by not letting schools to open and now, they are playing with the lives of students by letting schools to open only in the morning.

Education sector is not private property of SLMM and they have no right to play around with lives and future of small children. They are responsible people and should not close down schools; rather, they should let schools run smoothly so that students can learn today and lead nation tomorrow.
