Rio Olympics: Saraswoti Sets New National Record
Photo Courtesy:Sweekriti Gautam August 13,2016- Nepal's athlete Saraswoti Bhattarai, 23 has set a new national record in 1500 m race held in the ongoing Rio Olympics-2016 in Brazil. Bhattarai replaced a 26-year-old national record in women's 1500 m heats of the Olympic Games at the Olympic stadium. The 23-year-old athlete finished the race in four minutes and 33.94 seconds to shatter Raj Kumari Pandey’s record of 4 minutes 34.47 seconds set during the Beijing Asian games in 1990. Bhattarai got the chance to enter the Olympics under the Universality places after she won the qualifying event at Dasharath stadium. She had participated in district and regional events before making her the national championship. She took part in the 1500 m and 3000 m events in her first national championship in 2010. Bhattarai had bagged gold medals in 39th National Athletics championships and also a silver medal in 800 m race at Thailand.
