Movie Review - To Save a Life

By Barsha Dahal

Life is complete in itself. Family and friends are the most beautiful reality that we live every day. How wonderful our life will be if we have best friends with whom we can be childish! Even if the whole world goes against us, there will always be our best friends supporting us. In case we are wrong, they’ll bring us to the right track. Our best friends are, in a way, a reflection of ourselves. Imagine a saddening scenario. Suddenly you wake up one day just to realize that your best friend has gone. That person who used to be your every-thing is no more your friend. Your best friend has joined another group and has denied accepting you as a friend. What will you do in such a situation? If you are strong enough, you will forgive and move on. But if you aren’t strong enough, what will you do? No doubt you will be a victim of depression. You may do anything. You may hurt yourself or even kill yourself. It sounds crazy, right? But it does happen every day, every nignt in this huge dark world. Similarly, movie “To Save a Life” is all about faith, friendship, break up, patch up, love, sex, adoption, humiliation, despondency, suicide and guilt. “To Save a Life” is a Christian drama film directed by Brian Baugh. This movie is about two best friends who counld not remain best friends till the end. The main character of this movie is Jake Taylor. He has done a commendable job. The movie starts up with the end of a life, the life of Roger, childhood buddy of Jake. In the funeral of Roger, Jake starts recalling what had actually happened to Roger when Roger’s mom askes him if Roger had said anything to him. He travels down the memory lane recalling how he had left Roger alone just to be with his new friends and girlfriend. Poor Roger had no friends besides Jake. Nobody treated him as satisfactorily as Jake used to. However, time changed everything, even his friendship with Jake. Jake’s a very cool guy, a basketball team star. As fame enhances, he finds it awkward to be with Roger and starts parting from him. Roger, unable to bear this, gives up his life. This very reason for Roger’s suicide becomes clear to Jake after he strolls over Roger’s page in social networking site. Jake then promises to save lives of people through Roger’s page even though he could not save Roger’s. There is no doubt that this movie depicts religion, god and hope in a beautiful way. But somehow, I felt that this movie was all about Chirstianity. Somewhere I just felt that this movie was forcing us to follow Jesus to make our life hopeful. I believe there exists a God. But I feel that it’s not God who can make our life beautiful. I agree, God is a feeling which can make us strong but beauty of life depends on our own thoughts. We are responsible to make life worth living or an awful reality. If we trust ourselves, we will find God of hope and happiness within us. I believe visiting church or any temple is not a solution to our problems. However, I must admit that this movie had taught me many lessons. We are really blessed to be loved. Also, we should shower love and care to everybody. Everyone is special. Either they are handicapped, black or victim of depression, all they need is love and care. Love has power to heal every pain and to save many lives. Whenever you experience darkness shrouding your life or whenever you feel like killing yourself, you should watch this movie. You will know that your life is not a problem. The problem is your thinking. If you try to bring change in your thoughts you will surely get peace and happiness. Happiness is your choice and situation is not a great cause!
