Kamala Didi: Caretaker of Deerwalk

By Sneha Parajuli

Kamala Gurung, a worker of Deerwalk Institute of Technology is a firm believer that without studies no one is able to do anything in life. She regrets the fact that she could not complete her studies and encourages all the students to take studies seriously. Though she is from Sindhupalchowk, she got married to her husband who is a resident of Kalopul. Her permanent address has become Kalopul. She is a very laborious woman who works from 6:30 A.M to 11:30 A.M in the morning in civil mall and from there she heads towards DWIT to work from 2:00 P.M to 6:00 P.M in the evenings. She helps in the maintenance and cleaning of Deerwalk. She says it's her daily routine. Talking about her childhood, it seems she was a very active child. She had lots of friends and she loved spending time with them. She shared memories of her going to picnics, stealing fruits and vegetables from neighbor's garden, climbing trees with her friends and so on. She started doing household work from a young age which kept her engaged when she couldn’t pursue her studies after grade 7. She mentioned that she wanted to continue with her studies, but because of the economic condition of her family she was unable to do so. She was also not supported by her parents. She felt discriminated due to her brother and sisters being allowed to study but she was not. Though her father was in the Indian Army, he was not able to send money. Her family usually didn’t have enough food to live on and couldn’t afford the education fees. Sometimes they even had to be dependent upon others for food. She used to carry iron rods from one place to another in order to earn Rs.17 as per the weight of the rods. She faced lots of difficulties but was brave enough to overcome them all with a smiling face. She eventually decided to come to Kathmandu in order to work. She joined a group of her friends heading towards Katmandu in search of work. She then started working as a helper in people’s houses. Afterwards she joined a company called "G4" which paid according to the work that was assigned. She was assigned to work for Xavier’s college at first but because of payment problems, she left. Later she was assigned to work for Deerwalk Institute of Technology where she has been working for three years. She is satisfied with her work and has no complaints. She enjoys working at Deerwalk as she works here with her old friends. Kamala Didi also talked about her family life. She has four siblings, two older and two younger than her. Her younger sister got the chance to study and now is a teacher. Kamala Didi has been married for 10 years. Her husband works at Galaxy School. She got married without her parents’ permission but she says now they’re ok with it. They have two daughters. First one is 9 years old and the second one is 2 years old. Her older daughter is a very good dancer and has won around 5 medals in dancing. When she was asked about the most memorable moment of her life, her face brightened and she shared a lot of things with me. She mentioned about the day she went to visit a place called “Silgudi” with her father. She still remembers the railway stand where she stood and saw a train for the first time. She was so happy to see the train, though she didn’t get a chance to ride on it. She showed deep sorrow when I inquired about the saddest moment of her life. She recalled that she used to feel very sad and cried a lot when her mother went blind. Even after lots of treatments her mother was not recovering and no one knew what she was suffering from but to her relief, her mother's eyesight returned after a month of treatment. She promises that even though she didn’t get to study, she will try her best to make her two daughters well educated so that they will never have to rely upon others in their life. She was not able to complete her 7th grade because her mother did not give her Rs. 50 for her exam fee but she would never let that happen to her children. She says that she will support every correct decision made by her daughters and make them successful in their life. After a whole week's hard work, she gets a little time to spend with her family in the weekends. She loves the students and teachers of Deerwalk and their helpful behavior. Even though she didn’t get to study, she knows the importance of education. She tells all of us to study hard so that we will not have to face difficulties in life like she has. The most troublesome life is of those who are not educated enough to be independent in life. So, Kamala didi wishes all of us a bright future. She says, “Life is full of obstacles, so prepare enough to face them and overcome them all.”
