The fully-fledged Woman’s Day

By Asmita Subedi

"A woman with a voice is by definition a strong woman. But the search to find that voice can be remarkably difficult." - Melinda Gates

The news about the celebrations and events conducted on the mark of International Women’s Day are still a buzz on the news market. The whole world celebrated it and almost every leader made promises and aspirations for women’s empowerment. But the question is, focusing on one special day, is it enough to bring the change?? The whole world is aware about the fact that women’s equality makes positive change but still the world is unequal. It’s not that any initiatives are not taken. But, what has been done is not enough to make the change. There are women who walk shoulder to shoulder with men and reach high watermark in almost every field, but what about the rest? For the rest, the story goes this way: Every so often, we hear the witness of victims of rape, violence, allegations, harassment, trafficking, etc. The mental stresses are still not so far on count. What about the discrimination she faces in her own family and society members. We live in the society where we are judged by the dresses we wear. The irony is that, when a woman is being provoked, the first question the society puts forward is “What was she wearing?”, “Why was she there?” What was she doing there late night?” and many more. What rubbish!  Doesn’t a woman have right to wear dresses of her choice? Does wearing a dress mean giving an offer to provoke? I don’t understand what’s actually wrong with people who keep on blabbering about clothes and completely neglect the fact that who was the criminal and how should he be punished? Would they make these sorts of snobbish talks had this happened to their own? Don’t you all accept the fact that certain aspect of our humanity is lost? Most of all, instead of love and support, the victims are tormented and embarrassed. What if we could encourage and help them fight for their rights? What if we could teach men to respect the women? On the other hand, instead of imposing strict punishments, the criminals and culprits are left free. This has contributed in encouraging the wrong doers. That’s the reason why women feel hopeless and retreat despite knowing they deserve right. They deny fighting for their rights in the terror of losing their dignity and self-respect. Here, what’s wrong is the way of thinking and vision of analyzing things. There is narrow mentality and misconceptions prevailing among the people in our society. Somewhat the laws are also not so strong that every woman would feel secured and her rights guaranteed. Don’t you all think that we don’t forget to impose such many restrictions upon women, but we lack in teaching the real and decent men the differences between what’s wrong or right? Impressive promises regarding women’s empowerment are all useless until and unless we change our misconceptions. A change in mentality is the most for the utmost change of society and for the provenance of equality. For me, the society, where men respect every woman and women have all sorts of rights equal to that of man, is the real society. Women should be able to live their life the way they want with full freedom and dignity. All the responsible people should live together with unity and protecting each other’s right. Then only we can imagine a fully-fledged “Women’s Day” with a world of equality and positive changes. Lastly, I proudly salute great women for the change they have created. Men please learn to respect every woman. And Women Come on! Dare to fight for every right you deserve!! Hope to see the fully-fledged Woman’s Day soon.
