Paulo Coelho's book “The Alchemist” is a lovely book, gentle but philosophical. This novel is delightful and has inspired most of the people around the world. It is about the importance of looking for one’s own meaning of life and spending one’s life fulfilling it. According to Coelho, it is called seeking one’s “Personal Legend.” This story is full of simplicity and inspiration. It portrays an Andalusian shepherd boy named Santiago as a voyager who is in search of a treasure buried in the Pyramids. As he travels from his native land in Spain to the Egyptian desert to get to his destination, along the way he meets a Gypsy woman, a man who calls himself king, and an alchemist. Each one of them helps Santiago in heading towards his destination. The treasure is unknown and no one knows if Santiago will be able to overcome the obstacles along the way. But as he travels in search of treasure, his journey turns into a disclosure of treasure within himself. The story of Santiago in this novel is a demonstration of listening to our heart and fulfilling our dreams. In this novel, Paulo Coelho showcases Santiago in a way similar to those in fairy tales. However, Coelho also provides us a clear overview of set of obstacles likely to face by his protagonist and how he fulfills them all. He attempts to imply that in order to pursue our own sole Personal Legend we must be ready to overcome the factors like tradition, family, law and religion that dictate our lives. The title of this novel is somehow based on an alchemist in the novel whom the shepherd boy meets and who helps him in many ways and actually turns the shepherd boy into an alchemist himself. On Coelho’s account, anyone who truly attains his or her Personal Legend becomes an alchemist, changing the improper life in the beginning to a life with one's own personal success. Everyone who is in search of inspiration should read this optimistic book of the one who seems to have succeeded in the process of turning a simple life into a golden achievement and become an Alchemist.
