Library Responsibility Handed to Students

By Ashish Bikram Lamichane

From the time I joined DWIT, I have been hearing our chief academic director, Hitesh Karki, mention “DWIT is different” in a majority of his speeches. I always used to think from what perspective DWIT is different. I even thought that DWIT is different for giving less holidays, with a bumper package of assignments. But now I have realized why it is different. It is different for trying to make its students more responsible. Recently, two students of DWIT have been chosen to work in the library. It’s not a new thing that responsibility has been given to the students. DWIT usually distributes different responsibilities to different students. The two students were chosen from many interested candidates. The two lucky students who are currently working in the library are Prabina Neupane from Class of 2016 and Mohan Singh Bomrel from Class of 2017. They have their own time shifts to work in the library. Prabina’s shift is from 8 am to 9 am in the morning and 5 pm to 6 pm in the evening whereas Mohan’s shift is from 7 am to 8 am in the mornings and 6 to 7 pm in the evenings. They have to work in the library even on holidays. If there are any students in the college who have active classes, they must work in the library. They aren’t doing this for free. As per the agreement that they had signed before getting involved as librarians, they will be paid 60 Rupees per hour. Nowadays, the library has become well managed. We can easily find the book we are looking for. Students are only allowed to keep the book for 1 week so that every student gets a chance to borrow the book.

When I asked Prabina, “What if the borrowed book is not returned in time?” She gave the answer which I was not happy to hear as a student. She said, “They will be fined. This will be strictly implemented”. In my opinion, the college has chosen the students who can fulfill their responsibility wisely. The new librarians have made the library a better place for the students who want to study in peace. They are planning to increase the number of books and chairs in the library to make it more student-friendly. The library, which used to be closed most of the time, is almost always wide open to welcome us nowadays. We should be thankful to Prabina and Mohan for fulfilling their responsibility wisely. This has helped us very much. We can get books of our choice easily, but beware “Return those books in time otherwise you have to pay fine!”
